چکیده

The E-164 experiment at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center is the third in a series investigating Plasma Wakefield Acceleration where the wake is driven by electron bunches. A collaboration between SLAC, UCLA and USC, E-164 has up to 2x10 electrons at 28.5GeV in 100 micron long bunches. These bunches enter a 30cm long Lithium plasma with density of 6x10 electrons/cm, where the transfer of energy from the head of the bunch to the tail takes place. In addition to acceleration, strong focusing, refraction of the electron beam and “betatron X-ray” production are all investigated. E-164 builds on related prior experiments, and its apparatus has evolved considerably. A third Optical Transition Radiator has been added for real time Twiss Parameter measurements which include the effects of scattering. The plasma cell is moved to the focus of the Final Focus Test Beam facility in order to increase bunch electron density. Spectrometry is extended with an upstream chicane in a dispersive region to produce synchrotron X-rays. Performance of these improvements and status of the experiment are discussed.

Plasma Wakefield Acceleration of a Positron Beam Proposal for an Extension of Experiment E-157 Experimenters

Introduction SLAC experiment E-157 is a study of plasma wakefield acceleration. The experiment was proposed and approved in 1997 with the goal of measuring acceleration by an electron beam-driven plasma wave. This is a proposal to extend these measurements to a positron beamdriven plasma wave where the physics is qualitatively different. There are strong motivations for proposing this extension...

A Beam Driven Plasma-Wakefield Linear Collider: From Higgs Factory to Multi-TeV Summarized for CSS2013

1. Introduction Plasma wakefield acceleration (PWFA) holds much promise for advancing the energy frontier because it can potentially provide a 1000-fold or more increase in acceleration gradient with excellent power efficiency with respect to standard technologies. Most of the advances in beam-driven plasma wakefield acceleration were obtained by a UCLA/USC/SLAC collaboration working at the SLA...

A Proposal for a 1 GeV Plasma-Wakefield Acceleration Experiment at SLAC*

A plasma-based wakefield acceleration (PWFA) experiment is proposed that will accelerate parts of an SLC bunch by up to 1 GeV/m over a length of 1 m. A single SLC bunch is used to both induce wakefields in the one meter long plasma and to witness the resulting beam acceleration. The proposed experiment will -explore and further develop the techniques that are needed to apply high-gradient plasm...

Plasma wakefield acceleration experiments at FACET

FACET—Facilities for Accelerator science and Experimental Test beams at SLAC—will provide high-energy-density electron and positron beams with peak currents of roughly 20 kA that will be focused down to a 10μm× 10μm transverse spot size at an energy of ∼23GeV. With FACET, the SLAC linac will support a unique program concentrating on second-generation research in plasma wakefield acceleration. T...

شبیه‌سازی ذره‌ای شتاب دادن الکترون‌ها در پلاسمای کم چگال

One of the interesting Laser-Plasma phenomena, when the laser power is high and ultra intense, is the generation of large amplitude plasma waves (Wakefield) and electron acceleration. An intense electromagnetic laser pulse can create plasma oscillations through the action of the nonlinear pondermotive force. electrons trapped in the wake can be accelerated to high energies, more than 1 TW. Of t...
